Antipsychotic Medications : A Guide

(below is the second excerpt from the guide)

What are the signs of taking too much antipsychotic medication?

Antipsychotic medications have a good track record for safety, but accidental or deliberate overdose sometimes occurs. Common symptoms of overdose include:

  • difficult or unusually fast breathing
  • extreme dizziness or lightheadedness
  • excessive drowsiness or coma
  • great tiredness or weakness
  • unusual excitement
  • disorientation and memory difficulties
  • muscle trembling, jerking, or stiffness
  • seizures (convulsions, fits)

An overdose of any antipsychotic drug could be serious, so if one occurs, the doctor should be notified immediately so that medical evaluation and treatment can be obtained promptly.
