Fearful Flyer's Guide

(below is the second excerpt from the guide)

How safe is flying? Very safe! The chance of dying in a crash of a United States commercial airline is one in 7,500,000. A car crash causes the death of one in every 125 Americans. Per passenger mile traveled, planes are 161 times safer than cars. That was based on 1992 data when 33 people died in crashes of large United States carriers and 33,689 died in automobile accidents (plus another 5,546 pedestrians). Small private aircraft were less safe and 853 died in private aviation accidents in 1992. In 1993, only one person died because of a crash on large United States carriers.

In an average year in the United States 22,000 citizens are murdered, 13,000 die in falls, 2,900 choke to death and 800 are killed by falling objects.
