Obsessive
Compulsive Disorder: A Guide
(below is the first excerpt from the guide) How long does it take before improvement from behavior therapy begins? Sometimes improvement occurs during and after the first session. However, gains may not be recognizable for a few sessions. Some improvement should be apparent within five or six sessions where real exposure has occurred and rituals have been resisted, or it is unlikely that substantial gains will occur even with many more sessions. However, once improvement begins, it is likely to increase for many months. Sometimes there is a lag between improvement in behaviors and trust that the gains are real. These "cognitive" or thinking and "affective" or feeling lags may last up to four months and reflect the many years over which obsessions and rituals have become ingrained. Persistent exposure and ritual prevention lead to growing appreciation of progress as real reductions in obsessions and rituals occur. Since behavior therapy is a treatment patients can apply whenever necessary, the gains realized with behavior therapy are usually maintained for many years and, often, indefinitely. |
